After this Monday’s tragic loss, we honor the memory of Annette Funicello this Starstruck Saturday.
Diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in 1987, Annette announced her struggle publicly 5 years later and started the Annette Funicello Research Fund for Neurological Diseases in 1993.
Her cheerfulness was legendary. Her response to learning she had multiple sclerosis, a chronic disease of the central nervous system, was to start a charity to find a cure.
Discovered by Walt Disney himself, Annette has made a lasting impression from her time as Mouseketeer to her activism as an adult. If you’d like to hear her talk about living with MS, watch this 1994 interview with Katie Couric.
And if Annette is a little before your time, Hulu is to the rescue: you can join me this weekend in watching Beach Party to celebrate the life of a beautiful soul.
